ABOUT YES, AND

Austin-based choreographer and Bates Dance Festival artist-in-residence, Gesel Mason will lead community workshops in Lewiston and Portland, Maine, as part of her project, Yes, And. This project is a series of performance experiments that explore and celebrate Black womanhood in all its complexity. Yes, And asks a bold question: What would you do, and who would you be, if as a Black woman, you had nothing to worry about?

These workshops, open to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, will contribute to a presentation in July 2025 that celebrates members of the Maine community.

SCHEDULE

Rooted in the question, “Who would you be and what would you do, if you were completely free?” you’ll blend movement, reflection, and creativity to imagine new possibilities for yourself and your community. Come prepared to move, scribble, nibble, reflect, and kiki in an open, collaborative space. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just curious to move, all ages and abilities are welcome.

Location: L/A Arts 168 Lisbon St, Lewiston, ME 04240

RestShop offers a unique experience that combines touch, improvisation, and bodyscanning activities to create a space for rest and renewal. This workshop includes a light brunch and provides participants the chance to breathe, reflect, and recharge. It’s a safe, welcoming space where you can reconnect with yourself while sharing in community with others. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Location: Maine Afro Yoga Project 1129 Broadway, South Portland, ME 04106
